Red Inquisition

By Memoir Theatre

Red Inquisition is a perspective piece that focuses on the 1947 Hollywood blacklist; a crucial set of events that, in retrospect, changed our views on how politics impacted the arts. Joseph McCarthy, an American Republican Senator from 1947 to 1957, was the public face of the Second Red Scare, formally known as McCarthyism. We are going to follow select individuals, such as The Hollywood Ten and McCarthy, that were personally affected or involved in the event to convey an honest yet unbiased portrayal of their respective views. We want to create an entertaining and innovative performance that will expertly weave back and forth between two worlds while simultaneously informing the audience about the true events that took place in 1947 and how the politics within the arts is still affecting us today. By taking on such a notorious subject, and performing it with such a fresh mindset; we will be challenging our limits as artists, and providing the audience with the opportunity to also question the effects of politics. As a group of high energy and enthusiastic performers, we demonstrate physically demanding movements paired with relevant dialogue over engaging, yet slightly abstract, storylines to provide the ultimate entertainment experience, that will educate and inspire all audiences.  With the use of biographical accounts, authentic audio tapes, propaganda material, written testimonies and more reliable extracts, we will recreate scenes consisting of tangible dialogue that will run alongside a modern day parallel to highlight the effects of political agenda surrounding the arts.
